Artist's Statement"Steel's austere constitution transcends into delicate, graceful forms, stimulating our awareness, eclipsing memories of its rigid past."As a metal artist, my work is similar to that of a painter. However, unlike a painter, my canvas is an unoccupied wall and in place of colorful brushstrokes, are three-dimensional creations formed primarily of steel. As a metal artist, I am not necessarily a metal purist. I am not averse to incorporating non-metallic materials in my work if I feel they will enhance the piece. My pieces may be crafted from new or recycled material and may also incorporate found objects. I will take advantage of various blacksmithing/metalsmithing techniques and welding technologies to attain the desired look, tactile qualities and colors required to finish each piece. If the tactile nature of my sculptures initiates a desire to touch and feel the textures, then I have accomplished at least one of my goals. |
Artist's BiographyI grew up in the Louisiana Cajun country and from the time I was a small child, my free time was generally spent with crayons, scissors, paste and any materials I could bring together to form some new creation. While the materials and the content may have changed as I matured, the way in which I loved to spend my free time did not. Unfortunately for me, my location did not lend itself to the advancement of my artistic endeavors. When I reached adulthood, life somehow got in the way of my art, and I pursued a career in sales and management in both the petrochemical and semiconductor markets. However, I was never without my sketchpad, my box of pencils or my desire to be creative. In 1999, the company I was working for was sold and I opted out of the new organization. I heard about a program at a local college where I could study to be a metal artist. I signed up immediately and soon found myself studying art, sculpture, blacksmithing, and learning to become a welder and metalworker. In May of 2002 I became the second person to receive the full metal arts degree since the inception of the program. I have been creating metal sculptures since 2000 and have been pursuing a full time career as an artist since receiving my degree. As a metal sculptor, my work is not unlike that of a painter. For 18 months, I studied the application of glass to metal. I am now incorporating colorful enamels into a series of works I refer to as glass tapestries. I am also adding elements of fine silver into some of my pieces. Some of my pieces are done on a "one only" basis, while others may be repeated. However, as each repeated piece is an original work, each will have its own distinguishing characteristics and will contain my initial stamp marking it as an original. Many people have commented on the diversity of my work, how one piece is so different from the next. I like hearing that. As an artist I could never do the same thing over and over again. If I have an idea for a piece, I want to see it through fruition. I enjoy creating sculptures limited only by my imagination and physics. |
