Artist's Statement

My current influences include pre-Columbian Latin America, Polynesia, Hindu deities, and the pop culture of the United States and Mexico. My work has been characterized as figurative but primitive, and celebrates both the beauty of nature and the beauty of that which is not natural at all.

Methods include direct carving of cast concrete blocks, modeling concrete upon armatures (often incorporating such objects as sticks and saw blades), and casting figures from hand-made molds. The concrete used in the pieces is comprised of Portland cement and a wide variety of aggregates including peat moss, seashells, marble dust, metal filings, vermiculite, and dirt.

Artist's Biography

Resume

Having received no formal artistic training, I have worked in diverse media, including paper-maché (for much of the 90s my paper-maché masks were available at the gift shop of Women and Their Work Gallery in downtown Austin), oil and acrylic paints (several of my paintings have been appropriated by local bands for covers of their CDs), computer-based graphic art, and concrete, my current medium of preference.

2000-Real Art for Real People, juried TSOS members' show, Julia C. Butridge Gallery in Austin
