Artist's StatementIn 1996, I began my studies of metal sculpture, sculpture, metalsmithing, art welding, and blacksmithing at Austin Community College. Exploring the amazing properties of bending and welding steel gave me the chance to explore the natural word, physical shapes, and balance, in art as well as in life. In 2000, I began also to play with copper and to include balance and movement to create kinetic sculptures. Copper pieces may remain copper-colored or may have patinas of verdigris or other colors. As a full-time biologist who spends a lot of time outdoors, nature's shapes and forms along with nature's mathematical riddles provide abundant source material. My sculptures are designed for placement outdoors where they can interact with the natural world. Balance and movement are vital aspects of the kinetic pieces, whether ground based or hanging mobiles, that allow them to sway, spin, or dance with the wind. |
