Artist's Statement

I have been intrigued with the relationships of the elements of art in the world around us and how we relate with these relationships as well. In my sculptures, I am striving to capture the extra dimension which involves the emotions, a personal statement that goes beyond a beautiful composition, trapping forever a powerful quietness of nature, or a rhythm that echoes the constant grace of music, wind or the sea. It's something that the artist and the viewer simply feels and shares. I believe each artist has their own personal shapes and forms just waiting to be discovered in a block of stone. My appreciation for the rock strata, fossils, and minerals grew out of the many summers spent in Colorado as a child.

Artist's Bio

Ms. Hendrix, formally Connie Sandage, was born in Mount Ayr, Iowa. While growing up, she lived with her grandparents in Iowa and spent her summers with her mother in Colorado. She received her first formal art training, which made a huge impression, while attending fourth grade in Colorado. Winning first place in art contests continued to reinforce her love for art and the interest in making it a career. She received constant encouragement from her teachers along with some scholarships to further her education. She received her BFA degree from Drake University in Des Moines, IA while working full time in the art department of LOOK Magazine. At Drake University she was accepted into the Delta Phi Delta (Art Honor Fraternity) and Mortar Board. She continued her studies after moving to Memphis, TN by attending the Memphis College of Art where she studied sculpture under the direction of John Seyfried and later metalwork and welding at the State Technical Institute followed with working with stone at the Marble/marble symposium in Marble, CO. She furthered her painting skills in workshops with Ed Betts, Charles Reid, Jason Williamson and Murray Wentworth. Connie has enjoyed a dual career in both graphic design and fine arts. She has owned her own advertising agency and an art gallery. She has taught art in the Memphis City School system as well as for the Continuing Education Department at the University of Memphis. She continues to conduct watercolor workshops and is planning some future sculpture workshops. Connie is now devoting full time to her fine arts career.

Her sculptures are in many commercial and private collections. She is working in stone and metal. Her appreciation for the rock strata, fossils, and minerals grew out of the many summers in Colorado as a child. This year is her third year to be invited to exhibit in Loveland's "Sculpture In The Park" 2004. She was also invited to participate in the "Sedona Sculpture Walk 2003". Her sculptures presently are on exhibit in the "Sculptors Dominion Invitational 2004" in San Antonio. In May she will be exhibiting both her sculptures and paintings in the "Sedona Art and Sculpture Walk 2004".

Her award-winning paintings also have homes in many commercial and private collections and have been exhibited in galleries from New York to California. She has participated in dozens of local, regional and national exhibitions, including the Allied Artists Exhibition in New York City, the Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibit in Golden, Colorado and Watercolor USA National Exhibit in Springfield, Missouri.

Connie maintains her fine arts studio in Marble, Colorado and Memphis, Tennessee. Making a commitment to sculpting and painting full time, she has moved to Colorado and is living between two quarries. She is represented by Perry Nicole Fine Arts Gallery in Memphis, TN and exhibits in the Redstone Art Center in Redstone, Colorado.
