Artist's Statement

When I moved to the USA in 1981, I wanted to know about the first inhabitants of my new country. I became fascinated by the Native American way of life, the harmony within their communities, their unimaginable freedom, and their desperate struggle against the white invaders to keep their land and culture. When I started to sculpt, it was no surprise that I represented Native American subjects. My main interest lies with representing human nature. There is always a story behind each of my works, and sharing it is a great way of communication with other art lovers. It gives me great joy when people ask me why I did a specific piece.

Artist's Bio

Born in Châteaugiron, a small town in Brittany, France, Jack was raised and worked in France before moving to the United States in 1981, first in California, then in Texas in 1983. Initially involved in law and hotel businesses in Brittany and Paris, Jack managed motels in California and West Texas, where he started to work with clay and had his first pieces cast in bronze. One day in November 1987 in Snyder, West Texas, during the Rotary Club lunch, there was a presentation by the local sculptor Robert Taylor who brought a piece of clay, some finished bronzes and a few tools. He explained what sculpture was about. Back home Jack told his wife and children that he felt he could do things like that...and the following December, he received 5 pounds of clay as a Christmas gift! No other choice than to get started... Jack visited Robert Taylor for some advice, then got to his clay. As his skills progressed, he began to make portraits of famous Native American chiefs such as Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, and Geronimo. After losing almost everything in the oil crisis of the 1980's, Jack and his family moved to Austin Texas where his wife had been hired by a private school as a French teacher. Sculpture was still a hobby to Jack who became a professional translator, working from home, making art pieces when times permitted. Jack and his wife finally settled in the country, a few miles from Liberty Hill, Texas. His desire to push some clay around was becoming stronger. Working in 3 dimensions in clay is becoming his life's passion.
