Artist's Statement

The Art
My goal is to use my art as a one-of-a-kind medium for sculpture of art pieces both fun and serious. Using a very different medium, masking tape, I hope to create pieces of art that cannot be found anywhere else. By producing art in my own unique way, I hope to be recognized as a truly unique artist in the art world.

The Medium
To create my sculptures, I use masking tape much as an artist might use clay. I do not use a frame or inside structure, but I mold the tape to allow each piece to take form. On rare occasions I will use wire to give stability for larger pieces. Once the piece is initially shaped, it is wrapped with tape to smooth out the features, and the details are sculpted. Each piece is then painted using acrylics to give the details depth and dimension. Pieces are then sealed with a lacquer for a final shine and to provide protection. Pieces are very durable and easy to clean. I still have some pieces that are close to ten years old.

Artist's Biography

I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and though not formally trained as an artist, art ran in my family as both my uncle and grandmother were artists. I began sculpting in masking tape in 1994 while living in New Hampshire. It started while I was wrapping a gift for my niece while watching T.V. and ran out of Scotch tape. I began to use masking tape instead, and during a commercial I noticed a piece of tape between my fingers that looked like a small horse's head. I thought, "I wonder if I could make a rocking horse out of this?" My first piece was a small rocking horse only about 3 inches high. I began to experiment from there. Within three years, I began showing pieces in galleries in San Antonio while working as a part-time artist. I started to pursue my art full time in 2002.
