Sculptfest 2002

by Marla Ripperda

Sculptfest will be held Sunday November 3, 10 to 5, on the beautiful grounds of the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum. If you aren't a part of it this year, come out and enjoy it, meet other TSOS members, get some ides. Bring your friends, bring the kids-there will be hands-on sculpting for the tots. Last year nearly 2000 people showed up to watch TSOS members demonstrate their crafts, and to buy art. Some artists got commissions. This year there are 45 sculptors participating. If you are a participant you should soon get in the mail an information packet including some postcard masters to copy and dstribute, and some posters to post, from Marla Ripperda, tireless Sculptfest coordinator. If you can help on the day of the fest or in the meantime, contact Marla at (512) 793-2160, or mripperda@tsos.org

Saltillo Exhibition Delayed

by Mary Paige Huey

The anticipated exhibition in Saltillo, México, in November featuring 3 Austin sculptors and 2 painters with the works of 3 Saltillo sculptors and 2 painters has been delayed until a later time. The Sister Cities Committee from Saltillo is concentrating on an exciting exhibit coming to the Mexic-Arte Museum on October 18. It will be the first time that the treasures of their Catedral will be shown outside of Mexico. The Bishop of their diocese and other reprsentatives of Saltillo and the Mexican state of Coahuila will be here for the opening on Friday, Oct. 18.

I encourage your attendance at this exhibition; the Museum as well as both Sister Cities Committees have worked very hard to bring this show to Austin. Perhaps after this large task is complete we can resume plans for our joint show. I have become a member of the Austin Sister Cities Committee and hope to continue to be involved in the cultural exhanges between these two cities.
--Mary Paige Huey

Editor's note: for more information on this exhibit at Mexic-Arte Museum in downtown Austin, visit www.main.org/mexic-arte or contact Margaret Johnston, (512) 480-9373 x 28.

Museum Day at the Umlauf

by Editor Ellen Gibbs

On the afternoon September 22 the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum played host to several Austin Sculpture Center faculty members who demonstrated their various techniques to over 500 visitors and helped drum up support and students for the school. While Kelly Borsheim, Scott Sustek, and Marla Ripperda sculpted and answered questions, Nancy Cardozier, Mary Griffin, and Heather Parrish manned the information table. Kids enjoyed the clay table the Umlauf set up for them. For more information on the Austin Sculpture Center, go to www.tsos.org and click on the School link.

TSOS MEMBERS ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS.

Saturday October 5 from 10 to 4, a number of TSOS members (Theresa Bayer, Ellen Gibbs, Marla Ripperda, Meredy Crisman, Bill Barnett, Rick Van Dyke, Ken Burns, Scott Sustek, Herb Long, and Bobby Pearl will be among the 25 artists selling their wares at the Great Outdoors, a South Austin plant nursery that already markets some fine outdoor sculpture as well as a vast selection of plants and landscaping services. This is the first time this business has put on such an event, so TSOS members are urged to come support the effort. The place is 2730 S. Congress Ave., Austin, 448-2992, www.gardenadventures.com. Thanks to Bobby Pearl for helping set the thing up.

SLIDE ARCHIVE

TSOS is now maintaining an archive of slides for use in presenting proposals for gallery space. We will be using them as representative of the work done by TSOS members. The Austin Sculpture Center has set aside a filing cabinet at the 45th street address where these slides will be stored should anyone need to retrieve them for any reason. Please send 1 or 2 slides of your best work for this archival file, if you wish, to:

Eugene Daub Workshop

by Bobby Pearl

Thanks to a suggestion given by portrait artist and faithful former student Beth Schoen, the Austin Sculpture Center is offering a five day Relief and Figure in the Round Workshop given by well-known sculptor Eugene Daub, who teaches at the Loveland (Colorado) Academy of Fine Arts, among other sculpture centers. For those who prefer to do a portrait, Eugene has said it would be possible to accommodate that desire, also. The workshop date is February 6th through the 10th. The hours will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for each of those five days. A registration deposit will be required and space in the ASC (formerly the Ney as you probably know), is limited. If you want to reserve a space, please e-mail me at: bobbypearl@tsos.org to get your name on the list. I will let you know the amount of deposit as soon as I know it. The check should be sent to the Austin Sculpture Center; 305 E. 45th St.; Austin, TX 78751 or should be given to Scott Sustek, our new Director. If this workshop fills up quickly and you are left out, we will try to work out an additional workshop at a later date.
