What Being on the TSOS Board Has Meant to Meby Marla RipperdaIn 1997, I began sitting in on TSOS Board meetings to see what they were about and to get to know board member/artists better. I was very new to sculpture and wanted to meet actual sculptors and learn about the business end of this art. When Kelly Borsheim stepped down from the membership chair, I volunteered to take the position of "Vice President/Membership Chair" with the emphasis on membership. The best part of the job has been interacting with our member artists. I've made artist friends across the state and throughout the nation and have emailed and corresponded with members from as far away as New Zealand. I have found our artist community to be very patient, no matter how trying my short-comings or errors have been to them. As fall approaches, I would like to find someone to chair membership in 2005. Requirements would be: 1) a desire to serve this organization and meet other fellow sculptors; 2) a computer with Microsoft Excel and a minimal knowledge of how a spreadsheet works; and 3) good organizational skills in dealing with applications and funds. I spend an average of four hours a month on the membership duties that include: TSOS mail pick up, Excel data entry, file member applications, make deposits or take the money to the Treasurer to deposit the funds. I attend monthly board meetings and email the newsletter editor 'Membership News' that includes an updated list of new members, renewing members, and other timely information due by the newsletter's deadline. I also respond to email inquiries from the TSOS website about our organization and I print out the mailing labels of current members for the newsletter editor. Please call or email me if you have any questions or are interested in this important job. Marla Ripperda at 512.793.2160 -------------------------
FOCUS ON: JANIA ASHBY, SCULPTORby Pat GalvinJania Ashby has traveled the world experiencing firsthand, the diverse cultures found worldwide. Innovative and organic sculpture integrates Jania's physical journey of discovery with her personal interpretation of the spiritual world around her. Following a tradition, centuries old, Jania learned how to sculpt in an Italian marble yard, not far from the ancient marble quarries of Carrara and Pietrasanta. Jania developed an immediate affinity with working in marble and has carved stone since her early Italian beginnings. Jania allows the size, shape and other characteristics of the stone influence her hand in creating abstract sculpture. Her sculptures are dynamic and often enigmatic; the finished work reveals and harmonizes, the hidden elements found within the stone and human emotion. Jania's work may be viewed at Gallery Shoal Creek, Austin, TX; Gary Osborne Fine Arts, Port Aransas, TX; Carriage House Design Center of Americans, Dania Beach, FL; and on her website at www.janiaashby.com.
