Hank Waddell One Artist Show: Saved from the Fire at USG&M

Umlauf presents its first contemporary exhibit, work by TSOS
President Hank Waddell September 22 November 26, 2006

Hank Wadell's West Texas Beach Ball wood sculpture

TSOS President Hank Waddell's "West Texas Beach Ball" (2003) was recently selected by popular vote as the first piece to be purchased for Austin City Hall as part of the City Hall Exhibition Program. It was borrowed temporarily for this exhibit. In back, under the sign, is "Original Sin."2000 Oak Split, sanded, oiled & waxed 26" tall. Photo by Hank Waddell.

In another of its special events celebrating its 15th Anniversary Year, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum presented its first contemporary exhibit, an overview of the work of Austin sculptor Hank Waddell.

Waddell works primarily with wood, his sculptures inspired by fragments of once living trees. As he becomes more familiar with each fragment, Waddell begins to refine it, working in harmony with its original form, grain, and texture, to bring new life to that original. His earlier pieces are more reflective of their forest origins while his recent work includes a variety of altering additions, like reflective or glittering automotive paint, intended to disguise the natural element that it once was.

More than three dozen of Waddell's sculptures have been on exhibit both inside the Umlauf gallery and outside in the xeriscaped garden. These pieces were produced over the last thirty years, with the majority created in the last decade. All photos on this page are from Waddell's one artist show at the Umlauf.

During the run of this exhibit there were two lectures on Waddell's work. Waddell has also taught sculpture workshops at the Umlauf.

From Bob Coffee:
The "Sculptor's Showcase" Exhibit at Beeville's Coastal Bend College displayed an excellent collection of the work of 19 sculptors - with small pieces showing in the college's Simon Michael Gallery and a score of larger pieces mounted imposingly on the College grounds. Show entrants hailed from 10 Texas towns with an 'out-of-stater' from Wisconsin.

Participating TSOS members: Rey Alaniz, Stan Briney, Chuck Bogden. Rodney Bohl, Ken Burns, Scott Carter, Bob Coffee, Siri Dehipitiya, Jim La Paso, Valencia Mills, Marla Ripperda, Chris Robbins, Laura Sturtz, Melanie Thomas and Rose Van Vranken.

Other sculptors are James Cayton, Johann and Kristin Eyfells and Nick Noblique. The exhibit ran through Friday, November 17th.

From Gilbert Barrera:
I attended the opening of the Coastal Bend College Sculpture Exhibit in Beeville. It was extremely well presented. Congratulations to all who helped organize it and to all sculptors who participated. The gallery indoors was full and well juried, Ken and Val had unique presentations of a familiar figurative subject - well done; the outdoor sculptures were well recieved and enhanced the grounds of the two large arts buildings there on the campus - it inspired visions and conversations of a permanent collection Texas Independent Sculpture Organizations - or perhaps the 'Association of Texas Sculpture Organizations'; whatever it will be called thanks to all for the efforts.

I hope we can join together again by email, or phone, or in person to discuss a joint show for next year, and perhaps find other Texas organizations who would like to participate.
