About Shakti Sarkin
Metal and wood sculptor in Austin, Texas
Shakti’s sculptures are made by welding, woodworking, and painting, and incorporate the unique art medium of wood bark. The bark is cleaned, dehydrated, and coated with polyurethane prior to being incorporated onto her steel armatures. Shakti is equally at home painting in oils and often her sculptures and paintings complement one another.
Shakti gained a love of sculpting very young, winning her first art competition with a hand-formed and painted sculpture. While she has continued creating art since, the fire that destroyed the loblolly pine forests and Bastrop area in Texas was the muse that triggered her use of trees and bark in sculpture.
Artist Statement
“My artwork often represents the movement and connectedness of things: trees to roots to soil to mycelia; branches to air to sky to solar systems; a brain’s branching neural pathways constantly moving throughout a body causing speech, movement, silent communication, appreciation of beauty.”
